ZOOB Challenge Kit
Reach And Teach Says:
Our friend stopped by the shop with her budding genius (and incredibly sweet) son and just before they left she said "I've got a meeting tomorrow and Adrian needs someplace to hang out. Could he stay here? Is there some work he could help with?" Well, we needed a bunch of CIVIO games assembled, and that might take around an hour. Then, I glanced over at a box a lady from the dog park had sent me and which I'd been waiting to open. Something called ZOOB, a building kit of some sort... Knowing how Adrian loves building things (he built an air-powered rocket launcher out of some random junk around his house) I thought he might be the perfect match for what looked like a pretty amazing building set. "I think we'll find lots for him to do." I told his mom and the next morning, in his usual chipper mood, Adrian arrived. After assembling around 30 CIVIO games (we had some orders to fill) and making an "armored" vest out of another building favorite, Skallops, Adrian opened up ZOOB. "Cool! We had these in one of my classes. I can make a flying projectile. They're AWESOME!" Within a few minutes Adrian and I were building robots and helicopters and vehicles and random stuff....
There were lots of step-by-step projects very well documented PLUS over 70 "challenges" which establish basic goals of a project but leave it to your imagination to come up with what you actually build. For kids (and adults) that want very clear step-by-step instructions, there are plenty. For others who want to let their creativity run wild, there's plenty. AND the parts are really well made, easy to learn to use, and come with a lifetime guarantee.
With a lot of gifted and learning-challenged children in our lives we know that having the right tools for learning is critical to their success. Whether a kid just needs something to deal with her need to fidget OR another child needs to learn some aspect of math or science where traditional book learning won't suffice, we know that products like ZOOB can help break through learning barriers. We believe that ZOOB helps achieve our mission to transform the world through teachable moments and ZOOB can provide a lifetime of those moments.
We had a great time learning how to use ZOOB with Adrian teaching us (I said he was a budding genius, right) and I knew that if I could verify the pedigree on these puppies that we might have a winner on our hands. So, I reached out to the founder of the company...
And the survey says... Winner! The founder of Infinitoy, the company that created ZOOB and is located just a few blocks from our shop, responded to an email I sent asking about where ZOOB was manufactured and whether there were standards in place to protect the people and the planet. Made in China, yes, but Greg (the founder) visits the factory several times a year and feels great about the conditions and workers PLUS he sent me a comprehensive outside audit report that verified that the workers are paid good wages, get good benefits, get paid vacations, are kept safe and comfortable, aren't overworked, and that random checks are done to make sure that those conditions aren't just for audit purposes.
ZOOB® is a building set with a difference—the pieces move after kids put them together. So kids can play with their ZOOB creations, instead of just looking at them. ZOOB pieces snap, click, and pop together to form joints that rotate, limbs that extend, axles that spin, and lots more. Kids can create simple models in minutes, or get absorbed and spend hours at a time. There's no limit to what they can build: from animals to aliens, from dinosaurs to DNA.
How can kids move a ball into a target with 2" high walls from 2 feet away? Build a ramp? A catapult? A trampoline? A zip-line? There are no right answers and we provide no solutions--it's up to kids to use ZOOB pieces (and other materials that they choose) to build contraptions that solve the challenges. The ZOOB Challenge features 175 ZOOB pieces, string, wheels, a ball, rubber bands, a foam play pad, and 25 challenges based on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) skills—skills that educators have targeted as essential to helping the US compete successfully in the 21st century.
What makes ZOOB different from other building sets?
- The pieces move after kids put them together
- It's great for boys and girls
- Versatility—unlimited, open-ended building options
- Intuitive—fast to learn and easy to use
- Built-in educational value
