Overview

This is a book that will delight those of us who want children to be able to celebrate who they are, both inside and out. And, of course it infuriates organizations like Focus on the Family. Yippee!

Reach And Teach says:

At first, I was confused... Clearly the character shown on the first page of this book was a little boy... dreaming about dresses. And that was fine with me! But the text said "With all her heart, Bailey loved the dress..." Hmmmm.... "Her" heart? But Bailey's a boy, I thought. And when Bailey told his mother about the dress, she affirmed my thinking. "You're a boy!" she tells Bailey. And, he shouldn't talk about dresses any more. Of course that doesn't stop her (see, now I'm doing it) from telling her father and her brother what's she's wishing for, in the following days as she has more dreams about dresses. Neither Dad nor Bro think very much of Bailey's dreaming about dresses.

And so the story goes... until she finds someone who tells her she's "the coolest girl..."

As a gay man, I've had to learn a lot over the years about gender identity versus sexual orientation. This book helped me a little more and will help children and adults move a little further in their understanding of gender identity. It is beautifully illustrated, witty, and very engaging.

Put this one together with Girls Are Not Chicks and you've got the perfect opportunity to have a lot of fun and some great discussions about gender identity. Cherish who you are, inside and out, and don't let anyone tell you that it is bad to dream about dresses, or tractors, or spaceships, or opera, or baseball......... Wonderful.

About the Book:

Every night, Bailey dreams about magical dresses: dresses made of crystals and rainbows, dresses made of flowers, dresses made of windows. . . . Unfortunately, when Bailey's awake, no one wants to hear about these beautiful dreams. Quite the contrary. "You're a BOY!" Mother and Father tell Bailey. "You shouldn't be thinking about dresses at all." Then Bailey meets Laurel, an older girl who is touched and inspired by Bailey's imagination and courage. In friendship, the two of them begin making dresses together. And Bailey's dreams come true!

Reviews:

School Library Journal
I had a graduate student come up to my reference desk the other day asking for picture books where the characters acted out non-traditional gender roles. When this happens (and it happens more than you would think) I tend to begin with the stories that can be interpreted multiple ways, like The Story of Ferdinand. Then I pluck out The Paper Bag Princess, Elena's Serenade, and William's Doll. The piece de resistance is our very special copy of X: A Fabulous Child's Story which you will not find circulating in just any library system, thank you very much. However, the book I most wanted to show off was 10,000 Dresses.

ForeWord Magazine
Probably the most daring book to hit the children's market since Heather Has Two Mommies.
- Elizabeth Breau

Rainbow Rumpus
Great for any kid who knows someone who is different or who may feel a little different themselves sometimes.

San Francisco Chronicle
[A] luminous little book.

CURVE magazine
Bailey's story and Rex Ray's imaginative illustrations will make this groundbreaking children's book a big hit at home. It's an uplifting, trans-positive book about friendship, dreams, and wonder.

Bay Area Parent
Groundbreaking.

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Newsletter
[10,000 Dresses] is a wonderful story that lets you see the world through the eyes of a gender variant child.

Bay Windows, New England's Largest GLBT Newspaper
Bailey may continue to inspire families in new ways with her bravery and artistic vision.

The 519
Wonderfully colourful... Along with Andrea U-Ren's Pugdog, 10,000 Dresses is another of my favourite children’s books celebrating being gender-blessed. Great to read to your children in celebration of that fact that people have all sorts of genders, that many women and men come into the world in different ways, and that we have the right to be loved for who we are.

Mombian.com
The striking collage and paint illustrations by graphic designer Rex Ray bring Bailey's real and imagined worlds to life with distinct style.

Edge Boston
Bailey is a wonderful creation, but then again so are the dresses she dreams up; the illustrations by Rex Ray have a sleek, artful look.

CarnalNation.com
A copy of this book and some understanding listening could be the start toward easing the inevitable difficulties faced by [gender-variant] families. 10,000 Dresses belongs on the shelf of every primary school library.

Philadelphia Gay News
Beginning with the vibrant sunburst and smiling child on its cover, Marcus Ewert's 10,000 Dresses is a joyous book about self-acceptance and identity. It is also the only children's picture book that features an openly transgender protagonist, and does so with both sensitivity and celebration.
- Dana Rudolph

Windy City Times
Delightful. . . . This short and lovely book gives young gender-non-conforming children a fantasy world where their dreams do come true.
- Yasmin Nair

Pam's House Review
[10,000 Dresses] is no doubt as important a work as Heather Has Two Mommies, and it certainly is as well done.
- Autumn Sandeen

Sacramento Transgender Coalition
Simply, but elegantly written and beautifully illustrated. . . a classic "finding happiness in who you are" kind of tale.
