Overview
Reach And Teach says:
Magical doors open when you get a child to love reading. As social justice educators we feel very strongly that one of the first keys to opening a person's eyes to the good and bad of our world, and our role in making the bad better, is through stories that allow that person to sit in another's shoes. Great books do that and this series helps move a child into the world of books in a fun and engaging way. We love the idea behind the books, the writing is LOL hysterical, the characters are terrific, and the plot-lines are very creative. We especially love the diversity of the characters in the books, who break a lot of gender-role and ethnic stereotypes in subtle but important ways. Some of the children are home-schooled in the series, which again adds a nice dash of diversity to the stories. Add the little trick of learning lots of new vocabulary words starting with the first letter of the title of each book in the series (Artsy-Fartsy, Bogus, Cahoots...) and you've got a wonderul package that makes a great gift for any kid age 7 and up.
And... even sweeter... we just got a card from the publishers with a picture of Aldo on the cover thanking us for carrying the series in our San Mateo shop! That's a first!!
About the Book:
Ten-year-old Aldo Zelnick had decided it’s OK to be a little artsy-fartsy. So when his grandma Goosy gives Aldo a second sketchbook, he fills it with more hand-drawn comics, fun B words, and accounts of his everyday adventures.
In Bogus, Aldo and his best friend, Jack, find a ring in the storm grate on their street. Convinced it's a fake, Aldo goofs around with the ring and loses it—only to find out it was a real diamond with a $1,000 reward. Will Aldo, Jack, and Bee find the ring again and reap the reward...or will their archenemy, Tommy Geller?
Accolades:
Bogus is the second in Karla Oceanak's series for young readers and it's wonderful. She and illustrator Kendra Spanjer have outdone themselves. Those of any age will read this and smile or even laugh out loud.
– Nancy Hansford, local authors writer for The Fort Collins Coloradoan
Another home run from Bailiwick Press – or should I say a "ringer." Bogus is a great adventure with a message of good karma and helping those less fortunate. Can't wait to share copies with my little Aldo followers.
– Jackie
Overall, the latest installment of the Aldo Zelnick series is just as good, if not better than the first. A perfect blend of entertainment and education. Karla Oceanak and Kendra Spanjer have shown again that they know exactly how to reach kids in that often, awkward time of life between being a ‘kid’ and a teenager. Aldo is hilarious, but absolutely real, a kid you could almost imagine walking through your front door at any minute.
– Julie, blogger and mom
From my experience, I know that students from second through fifth grade and reluctant to voracious readers are all enjoying Bogus.
